Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

As your dental team, one of our primary goals is to preserve your natural teeth. As such, a tooth extraction is only used once all other repair options have been exhausted. This usually happens when a tooth is so deeply decayed that it can’t be accessed for a root canal, or it has broken to the point that it cannot be trusted to support a filling or crown. However, there are a few other cases when it’s necessary, like when a baby tooth refuses to fall out. Rest assured, we will discuss all of your treatment options during your visit and answer any questions you have so you can confidently decide how you want to proceed.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

There are actually two different types of extractions: simple and surgical. A simple extraction is used when the tooth in question has broken through the gumline, allowing us to rock it loose until it’s ready to be removed. A surgical extraction, on the other hand, is used when it’s trapped underneath. This requires your dentist to make a small incision in the gums to access it before removing it section by section. Remember, the first step of the procedure is always to numb your mouth, so you won’t feel any pain in the process.
