How Do Traditional Braces Work?

A before and after of traditional braces

Most people have seen traditional braces before, but you still might not know exactly how they work. Braces have two main components: the brackets, which are attached directly to the teeth, and an archwire that connects them together.

This archwire is tightened every six to eight weeks, which gradually pulls on the brackets in order to move the teeth to their ideal position. The entire process takes anywhere from 18-24 months to complete.

What Orthodontic Issues Can Braces Fix?

Traditional braces are one of the oldest methods of orthodontics, and after decades of study, they’re able to do incredible things for the alignment of your smile and bite. If you’re interested in learning more, here are a few examples of issues they can address.

Bite Misalignment

If you have an overbite, underbite, or crossbite, you might deal with aesthetic and health consequences as a result. Braces can address these problems not only by moving the teeth into their correct position, but also by using elastics to draw the upper and lower jaw together.

Crowded & Crooked Teeth

Crowded teeth are not only a blow to your confidence, they also make it a little bit difficult to clean them effectively. Traditional braces can pull crooked teeth apart and bring them into alignment with each other.

Gapped Teeth

Gapped teeth aren’t necessarily a health problem, but they can absolutely define how you come off to others, for better or for worse. Traditional braces can pull separated teeth together, eliminating any gaps.

Caring for Your Braces

Braces that are being brushed

One of the things that you’ll need to think about when you get your braces is daily dental hygiene. It’s important for long-term oral health to clean around and in between your brackets, which can be a bit intimidating at first. You may want to invest in floss threaders or interdental brushes in order to make this easier.

You may also need to adjust your diet, avoiding select foods that can damage your brackets or wires. And of course, you’ll need to see us every few weeks for follow-up appointments, allowing us to tighten the archwire and check the integrity of your oral appliance.
