TMJ disorder may result of several different factors,\nsuch as stress, bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching), arthritis in the TMJ,\nor trauma and injury to the head, neck, or jaw.&nbsp; &nbsp;Clicking on its own\nis common (20% of people have it) and unless it is associated with pain&nbsp;\nor reduced mouth opening, it does not normally require treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TMD symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Clicking or popping\nsounds when you open and close your mouth, accompanied by pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Stiffness or inability\nto open your mouth wide to speak, yawn, or chew<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A locked or stuck jaw<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pain when chewing and\nbiting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pain in the neck,\nshoulders, or ears<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ear ringing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Frequent headaches:\npain in the temples<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Treatment for TMJ disorder<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment for the TMJ will depend on the cause and severity\nof your TMJ damage, so the sooner you can get to it, the less complicated and\n&nbsp;less costly is to manage. TMD treatment may include jaw and facial\nrelaxation exercises, lifestyle changes, restorative dental treatments, a mouth\nguard or night guard, or jaw surgery. <strong><em>There\u2019s no magic cure and\nmanagement is very important.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its best for you to see a dentist to do dental assessment.\nMost TMJ disorders can be diagnosed from the history and clinical examination.\nAdditional diagnostics that may be required include x-rays, CT scan, MRI, blood\nwork. Some condition you can help yourself with home remedies, some you may\nneed professional medical help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wearing an appliance<\/strong>: Dentist will look at your jaw\nmovement and any wear on your teeth and compare them. If the reason for TMD is\nclenching or grinding at night,&nbsp; you will be fitted with a protective\nsplint or a night guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Topical anti-inflammatory medicine application <\/strong>help\nwhen there is inflammatory process in the joint or the muscles surrounding it.\nSimple warm up the side of your face with warm cloth and place the topical\ncream. You can put small plastic on the top and the warm cloth over for 5 min.\nThe plastic is to prevent from removing the cream with the cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jaw Exercises: It is essential to do both type of\nexercise: <\/strong>TMJ stretching and&nbsp; TMJ muscle strengthening exercise, You\ncan do slow, gentle jaw stretching exercises in the morning to help increase\njaw mobility and strengthening exercise later in the day. There are many\nexercise available online, ask your dentist or make an appointment with us and\nwe can explain them to you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Important <em>: <strong>Start with warm and finish with cold<\/strong><\/em>.\nBefore you do your TMJ exercise, you need to warm up the join first with a\nmoist heat from a warm pack or a warm moist cloth. After you are done with your\nTMJ exercise apply a cool pack, do not place ice directly. <strong>Surgical:<\/strong>\nSometime, surgery to replace or rearrange joint back to normal is necessary.\n\u201cLess is more\u201d is the rule of thumb in this situations.&nbsp; Most providers\nwill try to help in the least invasive way possible. TMJ is surrounded by\nimportant nerves and&nbsp; blood vessels.
