It consists of variety of technology and\nspecialized dental software, all to scan, design and mill custom restorations\nduring one visit to the dentist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different companies that use CAD\/ CAM\ntechnology. My evaluation and&nbsp; overview is based on my experienced with <strong>CEREC\u00ae<\/strong>\n(stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The CEREC\u00ae Process in 4 easy steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exam and Preparation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon examination the dentist will make a decision on what\ntype of restoration you need based on how much healthy tooth structure you have\nremaining; from a partial restorations like onlay, inlay, veneer to a full\ncrown. After reviewing your options, the dentist will &nbsp;proceed with\nremoving only the decayed or weakened tooth structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scan and design<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The CEREC\u00ae 3D software takes a digital scan of the teeth\nwith the help of a small digital camera and converts it into three-dimensional\nvirtual model. This 3D model is &nbsp;used to create the restoration without\nthe need of taking an impression. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The software has all the tools for the dentist to design the\nrestoration right there on the computer screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Milling<br>     <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A mouse click sends the designed restoration to the milling\nunit, which sculpts the tooth from a block of very strong and highly esthetic\nceramic. Based on the color of your tooth, the dentist is able to select the\nproper shade and in about 10-15 minutes, the milling device creates the\nrestoration needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bonding the restoration to the tooth<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When it is ready, the restoration is polished, glazed,\nsometimes baked and bonded permanently into place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benefits of the Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Only one appointment,\none time injection placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No temporary crown is\nnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No impression is\nnecessary- uses a digital scan to create model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Conservative approach:\nability to retain the healthy part of the tooth <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Creates strong,\nbiocompatible and highly esthetic, metal-free restorations <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; High precision:\neliminates the potential of human error and distortion of the impression<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disadvantages of this technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It cannot be used for\nlarge fixed prosthesis. This technology is not effective if you are missing two\nof more teeth and long bridge needs to be fabricated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Very high startup cost\nfor dentists: variety technology, software and materials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Advanced software\nmakes it more complicated. Cost of technology combined with the cost of\ntraining, makes the use still not routine in every dental office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Does the insurance cover single visit restoration?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your insurance covers traditional crown, it likely covers\nCEREC crowns.
