\nThe debate about amalgams (alloys) or silver fillings has been going on since\nthe 1980\u2019s when there was concern raised about the mercury that is part of the\nsilver filling. Studies have been done with suggestions that mercury\nvapors are released from amalgams and in fact, some countries in Europe have\nbanned the use of amalgams. Research still is not complete and part of\nthe issue is that we don\u2019t know how much mercury is released and how much is\ntoo much.

\nThe main concern with mercury is that it affects your nervous system.\n Everyone is exposed to mercury through air, drinking water, soil and\nfood. As with most substances, the degree of harm caused by mercury in the body\nis related to the amount. Very low levels don\u2019t cause any ill effects. At\nhigher levels \u2014 for instance, when workers are exposed to mercury through their\njobs \u2014 mercury can cause memory loss, anxiety, auto immune disorders, fatigue,\ntremors and the inability to concentrate.

\nIn the past we thought no mercury was released once the fillings were placed\nand hardened.

\nRecent studies have changed this view. Very small amounts of mercury in the form\nof vapor can be released as the amalgam filling wears. They also concluded that\nany amount released from amalgam in the mouth is very low as a fact the amount\nof mercury you are exposed to from your fillings is less than the amount that\nmost people are exposed to in their daily environment or in the food they eat.
