Sealants
More than 75% of dental decay begins in pit and fissure areas of the back teeth. Sealants can prevent decay in these areasDental sealant is acrylic-like material that covers the top surface on the permanent back teeth.
When is the best time to place sealants?
Sealants cannot be placed if decay is present. That's why teeth should be sealed as soon as we see them in the mouth.
We check the suspicious teeth with DIAGNOdent laser diagnostic tool to make sure there are free of decay. If small cavity is detected we may use minimally invasive Air Abrasion device to remove it.
However sealants can not be applied to the surfaces between the teeth, where daily flossing is recommended to prevent caries.
How are sealants applied?
The procedure is painless and no drilling involved. We use special solution to clean and improve the bonding between the tooth and the sealant material. Then the sealant is applied and special curing light hardens the material in seconds.
How long do sealants last?
Depending on your child's chewing habits, the sealant effect can last many years. Occasionally, we may need to replace or add a new layer of sealant material to keep the protective barrier strong and effective.
